North East entrepreneur Tony Earnshaw is investing approximately £1.8 million to develop a new luxury self-catering accommodation business in Ponteland, near Newcastle International Airport.
Earnshaw, chief executive of facilities management firm UK Commercial Group and an experienced property developer, is transforming an existing property into Runway Luxury Suites. The development aims to attract business travellers, tourists and people visiting family and friends across Northumberland.
Work on the project is now underway, with completion expected in early 2027. Each self-contained suite will feature a luxury bathroom, dedicated living and sleeping areas, and a private kitchenette.
The development will also offer on-site parking and secure, fully digital entry systems, providing guests with greater flexibility, privacy and convenience during their stay.
Although its proximity to Newcastle Airport is expected to appeal to passengers arriving late at night or catching early flights, the business is also targeting visitors looking to explore the surrounding region or spend time with family and friends in Ponteland.
Earnshaw described the project as a significant personal investment and said he was excited about creating an alternative to conventional airport accommodation.
He explained that the aim was to combine the comfort and quality of a luxury hotel with the independence and convenience of having a private, self-contained space.
Earnshaw also highlighted Ponteland’s appeal as a destination in its own right, noting that the location provides an ideal base for visitors wishing to discover Northumberland.
The refurbishment is expected to benefit the local economy, with the project prioritising the use of regional tradespeople, suppliers and businesses wherever possible.
Earnshaw said he wanted the investment to support local skills, employment and businesses throughout the North East.
He added that the ambition was to create accommodation that guests would choose for its quality and experience, rather than simply for its convenient location near the airport.
The development team aims to welcome its first guests before March 2027.
