Wirral-based clinical trials specialist FutureMeds is preparing for international expansion after reporting strong growth in revenue and pre-tax profits across its European operations.
Headquartered in Bromborough, FutureMeds operates a network of clinical trial sites across the UK and Europe, supporting major pharmaceutical companies with the development and testing of new medicines. Founded in 2020 by Dr Radoslaw Janiak, Marcin Gondek and Paul Chambers, the business has established itself as a significant player in the European clinical research market.
According to its latest annual accounts filed with Companies House, FutureMeds increased revenue by 38% to £37.2m in the 12 months to 31 December 2025. Pre-tax profits also rose by 22% to £2.2m.
The company operated 28 sites across the UK and Europe during the period and employed more than 460 people in 2025.
Supporting pharmaceutical research
FutureMeds provides end-to-end clinical trial services, including patient recruitment, trial management and hybrid or virtual clinical research.
Clinical trials are essential to the development of new medicines, helping pharmaceutical companies demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of treatments before seeking regulatory approval. The process can take several years and cost more than £1bn from initial development through to market launch.
By providing the infrastructure and expertise required to conduct clinical research, FutureMeds is positioning itself to benefit from continued demand for clinical trial services from pharmaceutical businesses.
Private equity investment supports next growth phase
In 2025, FutureMeds’ three founders secured investment from private equity firm Phoenix, which acquired a stake of up to 50% in the business. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The investment is expected to support the company’s next stage of development, providing a platform for expanding its existing network and entering markets beyond Europe.
At the end of 2025, FutureMeds reported net assets of £7m, compared with £5.9m a year earlier.
Paul Chambers, co-founder of FutureMeds, said the business had already grown into Europe’s largest site management organisation (SMO) network, but believed there was considerable scope for further development.
“We have grown FutureMeds into the largest SMO network in Europe, but we are still just scratching the surface of what is possible,” he said.
He added that the opportunity to extend the company’s reach, broaden its capabilities and serve more patients and pharmaceutical sponsors was substantial, describing the partnership with Phoenix as an important step towards achieving its ambitions.
Europe remains the starting point for global growth
FutureMeds plans to strengthen its European network before expanding its operations internationally.
Chief financial officer Paul Maddison outlined the strategy in the company’s annual report, highlighting the importance of developing the existing site network as the business grows.
“As we continue to grow, our focus remains expanding on enhancing our site network, initially within Europe before extending our reach globally,” he said.
With revenue and profits both increasing, FutureMeds is entering its next phase of growth from a stronger financial position. Its ability to expand its clinical research network and establish operations in new markets will be central to its ambitions to build a global presence in the clinical trials sector.
