Scottish MSPs support campaign to legally protect the title of ‘electrician’

Two newly elected MSPs to the Scottish Parliament have declared their support for SELECT, the trade association representing the electrical contracting sector, as it continues its campaign for statutory regulation of the electrical industry.

The pledges from David Barratt, MSP for Cowdenbeath, and Lloyd Melville, MSP for Angus South, provide an early boost to efforts to secure legal protection of the title ‘electrician’, a move supporters say would build on the campaign’s existing momentum.

Both MSPs have added their names to SELECT’s ‘Wall of Support’, a public list of individuals and organisations who back greater regulation of the electrical industry.

According to the organisation, the initiative, which began in a previous parliamentary session, now includes more than 50 politicians from across all parties, including former First Ministers Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf.

Sharon Miller, Managing Director Designate of SELECT, said: “Securing the backing of two newly elected MSPs so soon after the election is a positive start to the new parliamentary term and suggests there is continued interest at Holyrood in discussing the issue.

“Electrical systems are becoming increasingly complex as Scotland works towards its net-zero targets, and we believe the work should be carried out only by properly trained and qualified professionals.

“From SELECT’s perspective, statutory regulation of the profession of electrician remains the most effective way to help ensure this.”

SELECT has campaigned for more than a decade for legislation that would make it an offence for unqualified individuals to describe themselves as electricians.

The association says the measure is needed to protect consumers, improve safety standards and support the industry’s reputation.

Some critics of additional regulation however, have previously raised concerns about potential costs, the risk of limiting competition and increased administrative burdens for businesses.

Miller stated that she intends to continue engaging with MSPs and other stakeholders to keep the protection of the title ‘electrician’ on the political agenda and secure legislative change.
