REDEVELOPMENT PLAN OF BUCHANAN GALLERIES SUBMITTED
The team behind proposals to redevelop Buchanan Galleries has submitted a formal Proposal Application Notice to Glasgow City Council.
This move enabled community engagement partner New Practice to formally launch a consultation programme about the project on the 1st of June. Local people and city stakeholders have been invited to register their interest via the Commonplace platform.
Meanwhile, owner and developer Landsec has appointed its design team to progress the redevelopment masterplan.
International architecture group Foster + Partners will collaborate with Scottish firms Michael Laird Architects and New Practice to bring forward plans for the area. They will be supported by the Glasgow offices of sustainability and engineering firms Atelier Ten and Arup.
The redevelopment, announced in January, seeks to replace the existing shopping centre with a new ‘mixed-use urban neighbourhood’ in the heart of Glasgow city centre, ‘blending shopping with places to work, live and play’.
Nick Davis, senior development director at Landsec, said: “We are delighted to have appointed a world class design team that will work with city stakeholders and communities to bring forward designs that support the city’s net zero ambitions, creates a new and vibrant district, and extend the city’s iconic and accessible grid layout.”
The potentially decade-long project could also see a new public space created on the void above Queen Street Station, in order to improve access across the city centre, along with active travel routes and linkages to the station and other public transport hubs.
The Royal Concert Hall would not be affected by any plans. More than 850 construction jobs could be created each year during the construction of the area – eventually leading to 9,500 permanent jobs for the city centre.
