SCOTS UNIVERSITIES FEATURE IN BUSINESS LEAGUE TABLES
New research, published by one of the UK’s leading business financial platforms Tide, has revealed which universities have produced the most graduate start-up businesses, including sole traders, since 2014/15.
The highest ranked Scottish university in the top 50 is Edinburgh Napier at number 21 with 300 graduate start-ups.
The only other Scottish university in the rankings is Edinburgh at number 24 with 263.
Top of the league is the Royal College of Art in London which produced 1655 start-ups in that five-year period.
Tide also examined which universities have seen their graduates’ ideas turn into the greatest financial success, through the income generated from their intellectual property.
This time Scottish institutions fared much better with Edinburgh University at number 10. Students there generated £14.12 million.
Glasgow University was at number 15 with £7.85 million and Dundee was one spot behind with £7.8 million.
Aberdeen came in at number 20 with £7.33 million while St Andrews followed two places further down with £6.94 million.
The only other Scottish university to feature was Strathclyde at number 32 with £3.17 million.
Top of the tree was Oxford University which had generated an astonishing £213 million.
Tide then turned their attention towards the universities with the most patents granted.
Once again Scotland had six institutions in the top 50.
St Andrews are at number 9 with 563 patents; Edinburgh at 11 (362); 14th are Glasgow (256); 19th Strathlcyde (179); 21st Dundee (143) and finally Aberdeen are at number 39 with 47 patents.
Once again Oxford University topped the list with 3086 patents, more than double the figure for the second placed University of Cambridge (1377).
