Network Rail chief hails transport innovation at Connected Places Summit

The event included major speeches from key industry figures such as Andrew Carter, Chief Executive of Centre for Cities, Stephen Jones, Director of Core Cities UK and Sir Andrew Haines CEO of Network Rail. Guest speakers dived deep into the key role transport can play in driving jobs and growth in local and regional economies.
Addressing a packed conference centre with hundreds of additional attendees online, Mr Haines underlined the crucial role rail plays in moving large numbers of people into cities and the potential economic growth it can bring.
As well as making it clear that the private sector is vital to success and innovation. He also outlined how the current industry structure and contractual agreements have been significant barriers.
The Network Rail Chief also mentioned his personal commitment to breaking the ‘opaqueness’ of Network Rail, opening the organisation up to innovation.
Conference attendee Daren Wood, Chief Technology Officer at connected transport provider Resonate Group said: “Connected transport has the potential to fuel Britain’s economy, but only if the rail industry continues its commitment to driving digital transformation and long-term change. It was encouraging to hear Network Rail’s strong vision for private sector innovation.”
Another conference delegate, Patrick Sullivan, Chairman of the Parliament Street think tank said: “Boosting Britain’s economy requires a cast-iron commitment to improving our rail, road and aviation capabilities. This conference was another step forward in this vital journey.”
