CAMBO OILFIELD’S FUTURE THROWN INTO DOUBT
Shell has pulled out of the controversial Cambo oilfield off the Shetland Islands.
The unexpected withdrawal poses a huge question mark over future of oil exploration in the area.
Shell was in partnership with the fossil fuel explorer Siccar Point, but it now says weak economic factors surrounding then project influenced its decision.
Climate campaigners said Shell’s actions have dealt a “deathblow” for the controversial project.
The UK government is already facing a legal challenge from Greenpeace, who aim to stop the project from getting off the ground.
After the COP26 UN climate summit in Glasgow last month, Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon indicated her opposition to the drilling.
Campaigners have argued that Cambo should not go ahead after the UK vowed to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
The UK government has been threatened with legal action over the Cambo project.
Environmental charity ClientEarth wrote to Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, prior to COP26, warning him against approving the Cambo oilfield project because his decision may have relied upon outdated climate data.
