Glasgow has the most loyal citizens according new data
Posted On August , 2023
Compare My Move has looked through their removals data to find out which major UK city is the most loyal, by seeing what percentage of movers in that city are moving to somewhere else in the city.
Staying in the place you love is very popular among movers, with many opting to stay in the same town/city and postcode, and a massive 65% of all movers across the UK remain in the same region.
When it comes to the home countries retaining their citizens, 84.3% of all Scottish movers decided to stay in Scotland in 2022, only being beaten by England who saw a very large mover retention rate of 95.9%. Scotland saw nearly 10% more of its movers staying in the country than Wales and 22.6% more movers than Northern Ireland.
The loyalty of Scottish citizens to their country is reflected not only in the country stats but in the cities too – with Glasgow seeing 55.3% of its movers moving somewhere else in Glasgow, making it the city with the most loyal citizens in the UK. Almost 3% more of its movers stayed within the city in 2022 than the second most loyal city, Liverpool.
Glasgow isn’t the only Scottish city to make the top 5; Edinburgh comes in at 5th with 49.2% of all its movers moving to somewhere else in the city, only slightly falling behind London, which only saw 50.4% of its movers stay in the English capital.
Glasgow is a city that is in constant development and is known for its entertainment, nightlife and culture. It is also the 4th biggest city in the UK by population, with 1.7 million people living there. The biggest selling point for Glasgow is that despite all of this, it still has very cheap house prices.
The average house price in Glasgow is 27.1% cheaper than the average house price in the UK, and 7.3% cheaper than the average house price in Scotland. The capital of Scotland, and less than an hour’s train ride away from Glasgow, Edinburgh, has an average house price of £338,639, a staggering £130,848 more expensive than the average house price of Glasgow.
Dave Sayce, Co-Founder of Compare My Move commented on Glasgow’s mover retention rate: “It’s no surprise that people want to stay in Scotland and Glasgow in particular. The house prices of the city play a massive part in its mover retention rate and as mortgage rates are rising across the UK, I think people are going to be consistently looking for gems like Glasgow to move to and save money without skimping on the city experience.
Another key reason why people are happy to stay in Glasgow is that it is a transportation hub. Although being over a 7 hour drive away from London you can still get a train to the English capital in 4 and a half hours and plane in less than 1 and half hours.”
