SCOTTISH FIRM EARNS GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY AWARD
An innovative and entrepreneurial Scottish company that makes a significant contribution to reducing food waste and unrecyclable plastic packaging waste has won a prestigious global packaging award.
The innovation of ReCover Packaging, which has developed the leading technology for sustainable, reclosable film for the lids of food containers, was recognised at the recent Sustainable Packaging News awards.
ReCover Packaging Ltd, founded by Glasgow entrepreneur Ken Adams, has the potential to make a huge impact on the food industry. The technology allows food trays to be easily opened, securely reclosed, and recycled with household collections.
Ken, who has an impressive portfolio of projects in the sustainable food packaging space said; “We are extremely proud of the Sustainable Packaging award which recognises that ReCover brings both convenience and sustainability to food packaging. The fact that we’ve won this award amongst so many key players in the industry is a real testament to our design and sustainability ethos. Our technology has been recognised for its potential impact on both food and plastic waste, and for its contribution to the future of food packaging.”
ReCover allows food trays to be opened easily every time and can then be reclosed securely. This allows the food to be stored safely without the need to use additional packaging such as cling film or sandwich bags which cannot be easily recycled.
The forward-thinking packaging solution is helping consumers with the cost-of-living crisis. The innovative film recloses to keep food fresher for longer – leading to less food waste from the home. The impact of food waste is significant.
Zero Waste Scotland recently highlighted that “sending just a single kilogram of food waste to landfill produces the same carbon emissions as landfilling a staggering 25,000, 500ml plastic bottles.”
ReCover Packaging says that, compared with existing re-closing solutions, its technology has been shown to be cost-neutral, and offers manufacturers cost savings while improving the pack’s functionality.
